Bleach Review: The Princess Dissection

Sorry that I wasn't able to review last weeks but besides from being busy I haven't been feeling 100% lately (might be coming down with something) but I am here for this epic chapter! Finally we Bleach fans get to see one of the most anticipated Bankai and so far it hasn't disappointed. First off I really like the design of Kannon Biraki Benihime Aratame because I much prefer it when Kubo creates giant Bankai like Mayuri's and Komamura's because there is just so much more detail in them. I guessed ages ago his Bankai might be female looking because his Zanpakuto is one of the only few confirmed with a female spirit and it does look rather creepy looking with it's doll - like appearance. Secondly it also has a rather useful ability that can spilt open and stich back together anything Urahara wishes such has his damaged eye and his arm so he can deliver and powerful blow against Askin. Now I really don't think that this is it for his Bankai's abilities because since Zanpakuto are supposed to mirror the personalites of their owners I'm guessing Benihime also has a darker side like Urahara.

As for the fight it got really good with Urahara coming back strong thanks to his Banaki ability and actually has Askin on the ropes. I do like Askin saying that he doesn't really like close combat but he did carry a really interesting looking spear or trident in one of the panels. However the fight suddenly ends with the arrival of Grimmjow who mercilessly rips out Askin's heart and crushes it. I read that a lot of fans where disappointed that Grimmjoe hasn't done much since his return but I think this brutal move really makes up for it. Now I seriously doubt that Askin is dead because Kubo seems to really like him based on how much development he hasn't given the character so I'm 95% sure Askin will transform into something else. I also am saying this because the next chapter is 666 and there are a lot of fan speculation that Kubo is saving something really big or shocking for this.

DAMN! Now that's pretty brutal!

Overall a really entertaining chapter for a Bankai that did not disappoint.

Bleach Review: The Second Eye

Which one is the real one?

Shunsui manages to catch Lille off guard with his shadows however that doesn't last when Lille reveals the true power of his X - Axis ability.

Now this chapter defiantly picks up the pace a lot more than the last one despite it wasting a bit of time in the beginning. To elaborate it's basically Shinji confirming that Shunsui is the type of person who fights alone and especially now that he is Captain Commander however despite that I would have preferred more Captains fighting Lille. Throughout all of Bleach the fights have mostly been one on one, even the Espada in FK fights that started off multiple Captains against them eventually became one on one so I wouldn't have minded if there was a bit of a change here. Moving on Lille confirms that his rifle is made out of Reishi and simply restores when it is sliced in half, though this was going to be obvious because he is a Qunicy. We also get some cool moves from the both of them as they try to land a blow on each other and then Shunsui getting the upper hand by creating shadow copies of himself which made for an awesome shot!



It's been too long since we've seen a Vollstandig

However just when things look bad for Lille he reveals that when he opens his left eye swords can just pass right through him just like how his bullets can pass through anything. Then we get some great backstory on Lille and that he was the last Quincy granted power by Yhwach and is the most powerful one because his god - like ability makes him closer to Yhwach. I don't know if this is actually true because while his ability is overpowered maybe Lille just has a bit of an ego lol. Finally the chapter ends on a really awesome few pages when Lille activates his Vollstandig Jilliel which, besides from looking freaking cool!, immobilizes Shunsui and then fires several shots into him. Now Lille's Vollstandig is one of the most unique I have seen and makes me look forward to the remaining Sternritter Vollstandig, Pernida didn't use one but then again it was a left arm. It's power to stop Shunsui along with the X - Axis ability makes me think that Shunsui will have to go Bankai to win, plus Lille looks like his in some sort of a cocoon so maybe we will see more forms?

Overall a way better chapter than last time, besides from the beginning the fight is really looking like it can be just as good as the Pernida one. However unlike the Pernida one this one seems like it could be a lot more face paced since Lille is already in his Vollstandig

Anime Review: Sword Art Online

In the year 2022 the virtual reality game Sword Art Online has been released to the public who play the game by wearing the Nerve Gear which allows them to enter the fantasy world. Kazuto Kirigaya (who goes by the username Kirito) was a beta tester for SAO and is one of thousands of players who purchased a copy of the game. However soon after he enters he and the other players are trapped in SAO by it's creator and must complete the 100 floors of Aincrad to free themselves but it does not end there.

SPOILERS. I guess I shall start off by saying that as a hardcore gamer the idea of SAO really appealed to me when I first heard of it, I'll even go as far as saying that I wouldn't mind being trapped in SAO like Kirito lol. Because the first half and second half of the first season are set in fantasy worlds to me the anime kind of felt like a cross between World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy, however what really surprised me was how serious the entire anime was overall. Death plays a major role in the first half of the season so while this anime may seem colourful and fun in the description it really is a matter of life and death for the players. Then there is the second half and Kirito has to deal with some serious problems in the real world and the stuff in Alfhiem with Asuna and the 300 captured players deals with a lot of torture, mind control and potential taking over the world. I'm defiantly not saying that this is a bad thing because major consequences and a realistic tone despite it being about trapped in a game was something I wasn't expecting.

I do really like the settings for the first half and second half of the season because they both come with their own rules and experiences. Aincrad, as I mentioned above, is a death game and that issue is addressed a lot and through different ways; for example Kirito watches a lot of people die which drives him to become stronger and protect everyone but there are also insane players (Laughing Coffin) that ruthlessly murders other players. Then there is the levelling system which is an important factor for strength, there is the lack of magic so the game relies completely on melee combat and there is the 100 floors that must be conquered to finish the game. However what I didn't like was the pacing while the anime was set in Aincrad because months would pass in between each episode and the whole two years the players where stuck there is done in 14 episodes when the whole 25 episodes could have been dedicated to it (we could have seen more bosses or see Kirito go one quests for his massive funds and equipment which where all done off screen). As for Alfhiem it was quite different from Aincrad in a good way because we got magic, a new growth system and warring races of fairies. However because of Kirito's mission to save Asuna the warring fairies isn't addressed as much as I would have wanted but we got to spend some time in the real world which is something different from the SAO arc.

As for the character Kirito is a really likable protagonist; sure he starts off as a loner and a solo player and still mostly stays that way at the end but the majority of this anime (like 90%) of it is through his perspective and through all of his trials and experiences you get to see him grow as a character. What I really liked about him is that he is portrayed as this really invincible character because he is so good at games, he is a superior player to everyone and he knows it (he probably represents the unfair level system found in most MMORPG). The second protagonist is Asuna and she is a great, strong female lead for this anime and I really like the chemistry between her and Kirito and watching their relationship grow. However what I didn't like is that during the second half of the season she is this constant damsel in distress who gets caught in tentacles and is almost raped which is a real let down after she kicks a lot of ass while in Aincrad. There is Kirito's cousin Suguha who is a major character for the Alfhiem arc who mostly takes the place of Asuna and while she is likeable enough her feelings for Kirito created one annoying (and in my opinion unneeded) love triangle. Finally there is the secondary antagonist Sugo who takes the form of the Fairy King of Alfhiem and while we know his motives more than Kayaba the guy is a completely unlikable, perverted ass. Sure his master plan his kind of dark and elaborate (though generic for a villain) but he comes across as this whiny brat, I really did not like any of his perverted scenes with Asuna and there is no good or redeeming qualities about him whatsoever. There are a lot of secondary characters but I'm not going to go through them because of the rushed SAO arc they barely get any development and may only get one episode focused on them and that's it.

As for the animation what can I say; it looks absolutely specular! In my opinion probably the best looking anime that there is because there is no flaws in it at all. The worlds of Aincrad and Alfhiem are just really beautiful, well thought out and is full of bright colour which is in contrast the to death game that they are playing, while the real world is kind of grey and flat which like above I think is done on purpose to maybe show how the virtual world is better. Since the animation is just perfect the fight scenes are just so epic such as the bosses or Kirito's duel wielding and facing off against human foes in both games. Another thing that links with animation that I like is the interface they made that comes up in both games to inspect a character's skill, items etc. however it is not explained in much detail. For example we barely brush the surface of blacksmithing and equipment in Aincrad while in Alfhiem character creation was just random, we don't know how exactly a skill is increased and the not much Elf races is explored. Finally the soundtrack for the anime is just spot on; from the fights to great first opening and the perfect English voice cast!

Overall I highly recommend this anime for fans of video games and fantasy anime who want to see spectacular duels. I realize though that it is not for everyone because of it's rushed plot, that Kirito is too OP a character and that secondary character barely get any development.

Anime Review: Baka and Test

Been ages but I have finally got round to writing another anime review and I thought I would review some of the anime I have on DVD. Now I know I might get some new anime and I'll just do a review on them straight away if I have already went past it's letter. One last thing I won't be review Bleach or Naruto (which I also have on DVD) because those anime are so long.

The story centres around the main protagonist Akihisa Yoshii for attends class F at Fumizuki Academy in Japan. At this academy there is a divide among the students where they are put in to classes based on their test scores; A reserved for the best and F for the those with the lowest scores. What is also different about this academy is that the students are allowed to fight each other by summon avatars; mini versions of themselves whose strength is determined by their latest test scores. So we follow Yoshii and his friends as they try to prove to the rest of the academy that being in class F doesn't mean your a failure.

Baka and Test is a comedy anime and it is beyond a doubt really funny, probably one of the funniest anime I have ever seen. It is just the complete silliness of the whole situation and how class F deals with various challenges that usually ends in hilarious results. The setting is a typical for most comedy anime in that it is based in a high school however what sets this one apart is the characters can summon avatars of themselves to battle each other which kind of gives the series an RPG feel to it, especially in the way that they battle. The times in which the student's avatars are mostly used is during the Summoner Test Wars where one class can challenge another one to battle and it is really funny with the tactics involved. Unfortunately they don't use a STW as much as they really should have as it takes a back seat for most of the series which is a shame after seeing it for only the first episode. If there is one thing bad to say about the humour is that it is full of cliques; not that there is anything bad about that but you can basically find every character type in this anime. As for the episodes themselves maybe because it is a typical slice of life humour anime but the they are very inconsistent with each other; there is a main plot overall with the STW but it is hardly addressed when most single episodes are focused on other things like a bathing suit episode or (my least favourite episode) ep 7 when two main characters have to go through a wedding experience.

The main characters are all in class F and surprisingly they aren't as stupid as they appear to be and yet they have typical characteristics found in a lot of anime; there is the lead Yoshii, the good natured yet constantly portrayed as an idiot and then the two lead female characters the flat chested tsundere Minami and the well - endowed sweet Mizuki who both have feelings for Yoshii but of course like most main anime characters Yoshii is oblivious to it. Then of course there is Yuji who makes up the comedic duo with Yoshii, Hideoyoshi the feminine - looking character who even the boys find attractive and who a lot of humour focuses on and finally there is Kota who is the perverted photographer. I do really like these characters however there is not much that makes them stand out from typical anime characters in other comedies. My two favourites would have to be Yoshii because of his hyper and optimistic attitude and Hideoyoshi because of some of the jokes that questions his gender e.g. special bathing room was made for him because the other characters are confused if he is a boy or a girl. However the jokes surrounding these character get overused all the time like, as I mentioned above, Kota is the pervert one and that is it for him and when it comes to Hideoyoshi's gender. Maybe because of these characteristics being overused but it leaves no real time for any character development or backstory for them and the only one who really gets any is Yoshii. Finally the animation really does look nice and is one of it's strongest points; it uses a lot of bright colours and funny facial expression and body movement when it comes to it's comedy.

Overall this is a solid comedy anime that's only real focus is bring laughs to everyone who watches it.

Thought I'd mention I plan to review Sword Art Online again next since the last one was felt a bit rushed in my opinion (it was early days in my blog when I wrote it) and I may have been too harsh on it. When I reviewed it before I only watched it once and I didn't even have it on DVD at the time but now I have all the episodes and I have had the time now to really appreciate it, heck I cosplayed as Kirito at the last Comic Con I went to.

Anime Review: Death Note (The Kira Arc)

Been a while but I thought I'd finally get round to reviewing an anime that I have had for years and is so iconic that I would have had to review it at some point; Death Note. Now if you are wondering why it says Kira Arc next to the title that is because I am splitting my Death Note Reviews in to three parts; The Kira Arc, The Yotsuba Arc and The Near and Mello Arc. The reasons I am doing this because each of these Arc are quite different from each other so I think it is only fair to split up the anime and give them individual scores, plus I can focus more on each one. The Kira Arc is the first part of the anime which consists of episodes 1 - 17, also I do own the entire manga series of Death Note so I can make comparisons to it. Spoilers because I will go in to detail about the plot and characters because like most of my reviews this is for people who have watched it already.

Death Note is about a young adult named Light Yagami a senior in high school about to go to college who is also a genius and excels in everything. However he is extremely bored and resents that the world is full of evil like murder, rape, war and crime in general. Someone who also shares is boredom is a Shinigami named Ryuk who lives in the decaying Shinigami Realm, to rid himself of his boredom he decides to drop a Death Note in the Human World. A Death Note is a tool of a Shinigami that allows them to kill a Human as long as they know their name and face but it can be used by a Human and who just happens to pick it up but Light. Light decides to use the Death Note to rid the world of everyone who commits evil and takes the name Kira so that everyone will know that someone is in judgement of them. Unfortunately for Light the police will not accept Kira and have even brought in the world's greatest detective L to hunt him down.

The Death Note manga was written by Tsugumi Ohba who has only done Death Note and another manga I don't know however the anime was developed by Madhouse and I know quite a bit about their work. I know that Madhouse is really good at adapting serious manga in to anime with two of their most notable work in my opinion being Black Lagoon and Monster. It was also directed by Tetsuro Araki who directed Black Lagoon and would go on to direct two of my favourite anime High School of the Dead and Attack on Titan.

The series is a Detective/Psychological thriller with elementals of the supernatural because of the existence of Shinigami and a note book that can kill people. This first part of the anime mainly focuses on the mind games between L and Kira and seeing which one can outsmart the other and ultimately prevail. For a detective/crime story there are no big action sequences or shootouts because those aren't the type of people L and Kira are instead each one will make these elaborate plan to try and reveal each one's identity. This is the biggest draw of the series because when I first watched this it literally had me on the edge of my seat because L and Kira are such genius that you want to see who will make the mistake first because it will result in death for either one of them.

As for the characters Light is a really interesting protagonist since because of his genius level intelligence and the fact he possesses the Death Note he develops a God complex and feels that he is the only one who can lead the world on the right path. You do want to side with him because he is trying to make the world better however because of his God complex he has no qualms killing anyone who is after him or in his way be them L, the police just doing their jobs, anyone who finds out his identity or Death Note and he even considers kills his family several times. What I don't like about Light is his high level of arrogance and believing that he can never be wrong and I think that is intentional on Ohba's part because maybe he wanted to make some traits the audience won't like (after all he is the villain).

Now for Light opposite and you could say the real protagonist of the series because he is obviously the good guy; L or Ryuzaki as he likes to be called by others. L is one of my favourite characters because of his unique design, personality traits and intellect. He is like some mad, modern day Sherlock Holmes and just like him he can make accurate assumptions out of the littlest information. For example Light of cause is extremely careful in hiding the fact that he is Kira and to any normal detective there is no cause for suspicion but to L he nit picks so much of how Light acts and his personality that he believes that Light fits as Kira. L also provides a lot of light hearted and comedic moments which is what the series needs like the way he sits or his obsession with sweets.

As for the others characters Misa is really good as the Second Kira and the main reason she is designed was because Ohba wanted a cute girl character to work along side Light and for the most part he succeeded but she can be so over the top and stupid sometimes to the point of annoying. I do like her character but she sometimes seems more of a inconvenience created for Light's plan more than anything else. We also have the Shingami Ryuk and he is one of my favs because it is interesting having a none Human observing Light and making his own side comments. He also provides a lot of fun comedic moments because of his obsession with apples and that he knows less about the Death Note than Light. Finally we have the members of the Japanese Police Department who work along side L and while they are filled with likeable characters like Light's father and Matsuda but I feel there not as important as L and Light in the case. I understand why they are there however because you can't just have two super genius playing a cat and mouse game with each other, you need some more normal characters on the investigation and they do contribute because of L reluctance to show his face.

As for some notable parts in the first 17 episodes we have Light's dilemma in accepting Shinigami Eyes for half his life span which will allow him to see a person's name and life span. There are several moments when Light could really use those eyes but considers it out of the question because of the he does he create such ingenuous plans to get what he wants. Examples of this is the plan to get the names of 12 FBI agents for the real name of one of the FBI agent's wife. We also have the introduction of the Second Kira and a new Shinigami because its interesting to see someone with a completely different personality than Light possess a Death Note. Also there is Light's plan to free Misa from custody and I admit I wasn't sure how he was going to pull that one off and the plan continues in to the Yotsuba Arc.

Finally quickly mention the animation and soundtrack which are two of the best I have ever seen. Probably because of the lack of fast paced action scenes I quality of the animation for character designs, movement and overall look perfect such as Light's evil expressions and I really like how when a character is deep in thought the whole scene slows down and is in a shade of colour; Red for Light, Blue for L. For the soundtrack most of it is orchestral such as Kira's theme music which suits because of how Kira becomes a God - Like figure however my favourite one is L's theme. Also the voice acting is some of the best I have heard especially Alessandro Juliani as L.

Overall the first part of Death Note was a great start to the series and does a good job of establishing the characters and building them up. I recommend this anime but it might not be for everyone because you really have to be highly invested in each episode and you really have to pay attention to what is going on. Misa does let it down slightly because I find her a bit too much sometimes but that is just one small thing and she still is a good character.

TV Shows

Finish Revolution: You all know that I am reviewing all episodes of season one of Revolution because it is one of my fav shows however I probably won't do season two straight afterwards. The reason for this is because since there is no season three (and the likely hood of it drops every day) there is no real rush to do it.

Arrow: Like Revolution, Arrow is a show that aired before I started this blog so I couldn't review it straight away. However I thought why not review it now but also review all episodes like I do with Revolution because the amazing site, screencapped has all seasons. Since I want to start on Arrow soon I might hurry up in my review for Revolution episodes, maybe upload two a week, and finish it before the end of the year.

Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Falling Skies, Gotham: Maybe do individual reviews for these episodes as well but Arrow comes first so I don't know when I will get round to these. Also screencapped hasn't got screencaps for three of them and when I review individual episodes I would really like to use screenshots in them.

Anime Review: Eden of the East







Back with another anime review, this one on a favourite of mine; Eden of the East. This review will be spoiler free.

On Monday, November 22, 2010, ten missiles strike Japan, but there where no casualties and no one accepted responsibility. When the after effects of it died down and nothing else really happened, everyone just moved on and the event was labelled "Careless Monday". Three months later Saki Morimi, a university senior, visits Washington DC during her trip to America but shortly gets in trouble with the local police. She is saved however when a mysterious Japanese young man appears before her completely nude and holding a pistol and a cell phone. This young man has no memory of his past but takes the name Akira Takizawa and soon discovers that his phone carries ¥8.2 billion in digital money and can use that money for absolutely anything. We join Saki and Akira has they try to find out about his erased past, why his phone can do the things it can do and about a group called Seleção.


I knew I was going to like this anime before I even watched it because it is written and directed by the genius who brought us the Ghost in the Shell anime series; Kenji Kamiyama. He knows how to write a gripping story and Eden of the East had me hooked after only the first five minutes. As you can guessed from the plot description above this is mainly a Mystery anime which focuses on following the clues to uncover Akira's mysterious past and you will be eager for the answers just as much as Saki is too. Every episode gives you a little more insight in to Akira's past; we are given just enough each episode but leaves enough out that I eagerly watched the next one straight away.
However probably one of the biggest highlight of this show is the seemingly magic phone that can grant any request to Akira as long as he has enough digital money. It is also his main weapon to use against the many foes he encounters as the series progresses so it is interesting to see what kind of requests he asks for each time.

Despite the unlimited things that the phone can do, Akira trying to recover his memory and sometimes paranormal, crazy and just plan weird events that happen in the series it is still has a very grounded feel to it. It just feels very realistic maybe this is because it focuses a lot on todays technology or it because a big plot point is on NEETs, the state the government and jobs in Japan or Akira's constant movie references, but this is just one of the elements that really pull you in because you can still relate to the characters and events in the series. Overall it is kind of like Jason Bourne (and may have been inspired by it) but it is more light hearted and (in my opinion) has a lot more depth in its overarching story.







We also have a great cast of characters like Akira who, despite losing his memory, is a really positive guy from the get go. He doesn't go in to depression or sulks, he simply goes with the flow of things and takes each new discovery of his past with a lot of enthusiasm. This makes Akira a really likeable main protagonist because as I mentioned above he likes to stay positive so the show doesn't become a downer. We then have the main female protagonist, Saki and while the story begins with her she is not the main focus of the anime but is no less important. She supports Akira throughout the series and has a great side story where she encounters the difficulties of finding a job in today's society and we can all relate there.
There is also a lot of interesting side characters such (and not spoiling anything because you will notice in the first five minutes of the first episode) as the others who have phones just like Akira. It is really interesting seeing characters from all walks of life possess the phone and their own reasons and ideologies for using the money. There is also Saki's friends from university who run the Eden of the East website and, while they do provide comic relief, are great supporting characters.

As for the animation it really is quite unique from what I have seen before. There are a lot of bright colours involved, especially with the characters, but it is the backgrounds that really stand out. They are really beautifully done, everything from the streets of Washington and Japan look really realistic. As for the voice acting there are lot of my favourites in the cast who I have no complaints with and music that they used for the first opening was great, shame they had to change it though. The soundtrack throughout the series really sets the mood well either it during an investigation scene or something light hearted.

Overall Eden of the East is a anime I highly recommend, perhaps the most highly recommended anime I have reviews so far. There is something in this anime for everyone and will keep you interested throughout its eleven episodes and its two movies as well.

There you have it my top ten however I watch a lot of anime so there was a lot, and I mean ALOT, of voice actresses I wanted on this list but I had to narrow it down.

Anime Review: Attack on Titan



Back again but this time with another anime review and I don't think I have done one of these since my review of Sword Art Online (might redo that one since I after re - watched it and I am having second thoughts about my verdict). This review will be on the anime that everyone has been talking about; Attack on Titan. Minor Spoilers.

Attack on Titan is set one hundred years after a race of giant humanoid creatures called Titans suddenly appeared and brought the human race to the brink of extinction. Titans come in many sizes (the tallest being 15 metres) and they live only to devour humans without any mercy. While they lack intelligence they are extremely strong and are near invincible, they cannot be destroyed by any method except by slicing off a small area on the back of their necks. Humanity has been forced to retreat behind three massive 50 metre walls that have blocked off the Titans but have also isolated what is left of the humans from the rest of the wall. The main protagonist is Eren Yeager who dreams of seeing the world beyond the walls and hopes to one day kill every last Titan.

Now I just had to watch it because everyone I talked to was going crazy over this series and after watching it myself I can understand why. This a really unique and dark story that is unlike any others that are out there; it combines horror, supernatural, action all mixed in a medieval kind of setting.

First off lets talk about the Titans, the creatures that I am sure was the main attraction for most viewers of the series. At first you would not think that these slow moving giants with low intelligence would pose any threat to the characters but that all changed in the second half of the first episode when we get to see what the Titans are capable of. These things are brutal, strong and completely single minded about wiping out humanity and not only that but I have watched the anime and read the manga and even though we get some answers the Titans are still shrouded in mystery. This is just one example among many that makes you want to keep on watching the series.

I will also talk about the animation and music now because these two points also connect with the Titans. Another thing that is great about the Titans is the many, many faces that the artists give them ranging from comedic to down right creepy. For example who wasn't creep out the first time you saw the face of the Smiling Titan? It is these faces which to me almost have a kind of strange attraction to the Titans, you just cannot take your eyes off them in the scenes.
Also, you might have noticed but around the Titans and human characters there is a black line that separates them from the background. I have not seen anything like this before but it really makes the characters stand out, it even makes them look even more animated.
As for the music it is all great, we got a lot of orchestral soundtracks in here that blend well with the situations on and the music for the main intro is just awesome. Once again during the first episode when you see the Titans devouring humans and what the Smiling Titan is doing, it really makes you feel like all is lost.



However this anime isn't just about doom and gloom because the action can be really over the top when it wants to be. This comes in the form of the manoeuvring gear, along with a pair of swords, that the characters use to reach to the back of the Titan's neck. While this does make for some great action sequences, watching the humans take on giants with swords, some of this can look a bit silly. An example of this is when Eren rushing towards the Titans in episode five and his weaving about between the buildings. I have read the manga so I know that that scene is mostly over done so while it does work on the screen I cannot help but thinking that Eren should have been splattered on a wall.
But when the fighting does get started it is edge of your seat good and it is really dark because of the gruesome death scenes that the humans suffer. This is not for the faint of heart but those who like a lot of blood in their action will be glad here. Not to spoiler too much but in the series we also get some unusual Titans who attack each other which is some of the best moments in the anime.
 My favourite part, and arc, is with the Female Titan. She is so badass that she is also my favourite Titan,  she is just epic when I read the manga and it was great seeing her in the anime. Glad that they managed to include that arc before they ended the first season.

Now if I am going to be completely honest if I had to pick something that nagged me during the series is my lack of liking for the three main characters. Eren Yeager is a decent protagonist but I just find his outbursts of slaughtering the Titans to be annoying at times, he is good but defiantly not my favourite. Armin just gets on my nerves sometimes because he is a wimp for the most part who has yet to kill a single Titan, I know he is the brains of the group but I just can't find myself to like him. However the one who bothers me the most is Mikasa who is the biggest b***h since Rachel from Revolution in my opinion. She is portrayed as this ultimate fighter who is an expert at slaying Titans but they have made her too flawless at it that it lowers the danger of the Titans. Also her complete obsession with Eren does go overboard most of the time, I know he saved her life but her complete single mindedness with Eren (and her willingness to kill anyone and disobey the rules for him) is just not enjoyable to watch but frustrating. There are however a lot of great side characters such as Reiner, Bertolt, Annie, Levi and Zoe just to name a few.

Overall this a near perfect anime and a perfect adaption to a great manga.

Manga Review: Gantz



Back again with another review, been awhile but I have been really busy. This time however I have decided to review and entire manga series, so unlike my Bleach fight reviews I will be talking about the whole story. Also thought I'd say that I won't be reviewing the Gantz anime because even though I do like it and got it on DVD it does not even compare to the manga because of its low animation quality and just terrible original arc they added in the end. I will try and keep this spoiler free for you because going in to too much depth would just take forever to cover.

The story of Gantz follows the main protagonist Kei Kurono who, while waiting for the train, runs in to his old childhood friend Masaru Kato. However while trying to save a homeless person who fell in to the train tracks they are both run over and seemingly killed but they suddenly awaken in a small apartment overlooking Tokyo Tower. There are several other individuals in this apartment who also claim to have died or been killed but the most strange things that are going on is that they cannot leave the apartment and there is a mysterious black ball in the centre of the room called Gantz. After some time this ball plays old exercise music and shows them an imagine of an alien they have to defeat, it then opens up to reveal futuristic weapons and combat suits and sends them on their mission to various places in Japan. We now follow Kei as he battles numerous aliens and deals with the dangers during these missions and its strict rules and still trying to live a life as a high school student.

What really drew me in to this series is its really violent and serious tones compared to other manga. You see I am a massive Horror/Sci - Fi fan (Alien, Predator, Event Horizon; to name a few) and I am also a big anime/manga fan so I really wanted to find a series that is like the films I watched. That is when I found Gantz, it is exactly what I was looking for and it has not disappointed me at all.

Now I have to say that this series is not for everyone because it is really not for the faint of heart, when I said it was violent I mean it is VIOLENT. The aliens that the characters face are serious monsters who kill them in some pretty gruesome ways and vise versa because they are also being hunted by the characters, from humans and aliens alike you will see guts flying, severed limbs and even some rapes. But it is not just the violence there is also a high level of sex and nudity throughout it (95% of it from the female characters) not just some simple fan service you get in other manga. However do not take this as me trying to put you off the series because like I mentioned earlier this is something I had been trying to find.

I love the story structure in this manga because the story arcs is basically the missions the characters get from Gantz and they can be either short or very long depending on how many aliens they face and their difficulty. It is always interesting to see what design Hiroya Oku (the writer and artist of Gantz) can come up with next, so you look forward to every mission. But the down time between the missions are just as good as we see the characters try and cope with their normal lives. Thought I'd mention that my favourite story arcs in this the Osaka arc and the final Katastrophe arc.

This manga also deals a lot with the theme of death because this like Game of Thrones anyone, even the main characters, can die. Death will claim characters you were even not expecting so there is always the impending threat that your favourite character could be next on the chopping block. I find this really refreshing in a manga series because even though I am a huge fan of the Bleach and Naruto manga you don't feel any threat to the main characters at all because it seems their creators don't want to part with them and sometimes come up with ridiculous ways to keep them from dying.

As for the characters there is a wide array of them each with their own personalities and stories that can appeal to everyone. Take Kei for example he is not like other main protagonists from manga; he is a self - centred, uncaring, sex obsessed high school student which doesn't seem typical for main character traits in my experience. However as the series goes own we see his personality mature and he does find it in him to care about other (though he still is obsessed with sex and girls). There are many more to choose from such as Kato the natural leader, Izumi the sword wielding murderer, Nishi the loner who cares only for himself and many others. Now I have read some criticism before that the majority of the female characters in Gantz are only there to have sex, be naked and fall in love with male ones too easily and while this is a fair view I don't 100% agree with it. Take the two main females Kishimoto and Reika, yes they do have a lot of fan service scenes (Kishimoto for example arrives in chapter three completely nude and that is not the only time as the series progresses) however they are still their own characters with interesting story arcs and they are still badass when it comes to the fighting.

The art in this is also something that really makes it stand out from other manga because it is done using 3D imagining, especially for the backgrounds. It also has a really realistic art style for the character and alien designs which really helps with the horror and goriness of it.

This serious has thirty seven volumes so it is not too short and not too long and it is well worth you reading everyone of them. Overall I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes science fiction, horror and thriller and doesn't mind high levels of gore and sex. While this is a series that may not be for everyone it is definitely one of my favourites and is so unique that I am giving it a perfect score.

On another note I really hope this series is made in to a live action series for film, I know it has two Japanese live action films but I am talking about American films. Now before you argue against it I already know that America has so far mostly been bloody terrible at adapting manga (Dragon Ball and Last Airbender) however I truly feel like Gantz is something that could work if done right and I am not saying this lightly.

Anime Review: Sword Art Online

Back now with another anime review and this one is about an anime I have recently watched and one that I know is really popular; Sword Art Online. Now I know you are probably tired of reading this next part again but I have to say it; there will be SPOILERS, especially near the end as Iwant to go on a rant about a certain part of the anime.

The anime is about a young teenager named Kazuto Kirigaya (Bryce Papenbrook), also know as Kirito, an avid gamer of MMO games and has recently purchased the most recent and most popular game on the market; Sword Art Online. Unlike typical MMO games this put you right in the virtual world by providing the gamer with a special helmet which allows him to control his avatar in the fantasy world. Shortly after entering the game however Kirito and the thousands of other players are transported to the beginning area where the creator of the game Akihiko Kayaba (Marc Diraison) appears as a massive hooded figure. He tells them that all of the players have had their log out option removed and that they are trapped forever within this virtual world and that if you die he your real body dies. However there is a way to escape and that is by clearly the games one hundred floors each one becoming more and more difficult and having its own boss at the end. Even though Kirito is trapped in this world like thousands of others he has an advantage that only a few have; he is a Beta Tester (Beater), someone who has played the demo version of this game before its release meaning he has advanced knowledge of this world. Kirito puts this to good use and we follow his adventure of trying to reach to the hundredth floor.

Now I really like this story because like the anime Btooom! this is based on video games but unlike Btooom! the action and feel of this is more fantasy than realistic. This is shown with its typical MMO elements like monsters, guilds, item drops etc. Overall this kind of reminds me of my favourite RPG series Final Fantasy in some ways and that is a really good thing in my book. However one thing that did bug me in this however was the pacing of this anime because in between the episodes there are massive time skips, the players have even spent two years in the game before we reach episode ten out of this twenty five series and they also skip a lot of floors and boss battles as well. I know they could not show every floor and every boss but it is really off putting, a more detailed reason for this I will explain further down. Another thing I liked about it is how it tackles the theme of death so many times because unlike normal video games you cannot use another life, in this if a person dies they die for real.

As for the characters most are really great; the main character Kirito may be a bit of a loner because he does not join guilds but he opens up a lot as the series progresses and he is such a badass because of how good he is at this game. The main female lead, Asuna Yuuki (Cherami Leigh), is great as well because like Kirito she is one of the best players in Sword Art Online, even becoming second in command of the Knights of the Blood Oath, the most powerful guild there is. She is also Kirito main love interest eventually becoming his girlfriend and even his wife in the game. There are also plenty of others characters these two come across throughout the series, each with their own stories and skills and most I have found to be very likeable.

The animation is excellent throughout the series, I do not think there is a single time that I did not like it, and the battles are so well done; the movement is really fluid and fast paced. However as for the music there is really none that I found that stood out much. Not that I am saying that soundtrack is bad because it is really good and suits the settings and mood well.

IN DEPTH SPOILERS NOW

Now if I was to end this review here I would say something like ‘This is one of the most epic and unique ones I have seen and has instantly became one of my favourites’ unfortunately I won’t be saying that because after episode fourteen in this anime it take a massive turn for the worst. Episodes fourteen onwards introduces another antagonist, Nobuyuki Sugou (Todd Haberkorn), who is one of the worst anime characters there is. I find a good villain is someone who the audience can like as well but there is nothing like able about him at all, he just irritated me with his story, attitude and plan to marry Asuna. A very disappointing villain for the second half of the series which is a shame because he is voiced by one of my most favourite English voice actors. Another pain is Kirito’s cousin, Suguha Kirigaya, who is in love with him and is just really annoying about it; I just could not stand her at all.

Another thing that bugged me about the second half is that it is set in another MMO which has fairies, it looks like an interesting world but far just not as good as the Sword Art Online world. The reason they move to this world is that Kirito finds a way to beat the game in episode fourteen on floor eighty five and they have just beaten a floor boss that almost killed all of them. I was really excited to see what the other floors where like, their bosses and the ruby palace that was on the hundredth floor but NO they skip all of that so they can go somewhere else for the second half.

That is what I was going on about with the pacing of this anime; if it where up to me the two years they spent in Sword Art Online would take all of the twenty five episodes and the second half would not exist at all.

Another reason I did not like it was how serious the second half was compared to the first; there may have been the threat of death if they died but it was really fun to watch. Examples of this was when Kirito meets Silica (Christine Marie Cabanos) a beast tamer and they try to find a way to resurrect her defeated pet dragon or when Kirito and Asuna go on their honeymoon and they help that guy fish a monster or when they have an adopted daughter. Sure it is not like I want the anime to be all warm and fuzzy but it had a light hearted tine the second half lack, I mean the last fight has Nobuyuki Sugou trying to kill Kirito with a knife in the real world, not exactly an epic last fight for something that is supposed to be a fantasy game anime.

In the end I was massively disappointed with how this anime ended, if it was just episodes one to fourteen I would have been happy but no it had to be longer and because it has those more episodes I can not even watch the first half anymore without being reminded of the second half. This is a real let down for me because the first half was SO GOOD and would have been really high on my list of favourite anime when I get round to making one. Overall all I can really only give this anime just over half in the score because I only like just over half of the story.

Top 10 Characters in Gantz

For those who do not know Gantz is an extremely violent science fiction manga by Hiroya Oku. It recently ended earlier this year and it is one of my favourite mangas. Here is the list of my top then characters from the series (Spoilers for those who have not read the series).

10 – Oka Hachirou

Legendary member of the Osaka team and has cleared the game seven times. Oka definitely deserves a place on my list for being a complete badass to have survived the games that long. He also introduces much of the new equipment to the series such as the hover bike, heavy suit and mecha. His fighting style is mainly close quarters using hand to hand with the heavy suit and the gantz sword when it is destroyed. He is a very imposing individual and he always goes after the strongest aliens in the hunts, such as his epic battle with the Nurarihyon. The reason he is so low however is because we don’t know much about him due to lack of screen time and for being so legendary he gets killed off screen by being sliced in half.

9 – Kenzo Sakata

Member of the Tokyo team and managed to clear the game once, using his points to bring back Sakurai, though it is hinted he may have been in the game before. The psychic of the team he prefers to use his powers and crush the alien’s hearts or brains which I always found to be cool. Like Oka he is lower on this list because we do not get much back story and also because I think he could have had a better death scene.

8 – Hojo Masanobu

Member of the Tokyo team that was killed during his second mission against the Buddhist statue aliens. I like Hojo mainly because of his funny interactions with his stalker and that everyone acts weird around him because he is gay. He fights with a mix of close quarters with his fists and mid range with the x – gun and he did have some really cool moments when fighting. Also his death scene against the thousand armed statue was one of the coolest in the series.

7 – Hikawa

Leader of the vampires and one of the coolest characters in the series. Has a very cool design too with his tuxedo, hair style and constant smoking. Hikawa is an enemy of the gantz players and is responsible for killing several of them, his most famous ones being Izumi of the Tokyo team and the sadistic trio of the Osaka team. He is always shown to be very calm (even after having his finger sliced off) and is also a sadist that is shown through his sword fighting style. Could have been higher in the list but he has real conclusion to his story and is not shown at all except the end in the Katatrophe arc.

6 – Kazuo Kuwabara

Veteran member of the Osaka team and has cleared the game three times. Kazuo is without a doubt the biggest pervert in the series and is known to rape the aliens in the missions. He has a very cool design and is noticeable that he only ever wears half of the gantz suit. He prefers using the gantz sword his scenes are very cool when using it but he is also known to use the z – gun. One of the funniest parts I think of the series is when Kazuo gets caught by the Nurarihyon when it transforms in to a golem of naked women but when he breaks free he rapes its head lol. Survives the mission but chooses to exit from the game.

5 – Kei Kurono

The main protagonist of the series and victor of the final battle against the giant aliens. Kei is definitely one of my favourite characters because of how much he has done and been through to survive the games. I also liked his character change from someone who only cares about himself and his points to someone who wants everyone to survive the games. He has no real fighting style because he prefers to use all of the gantz equipment and weapons.

4 – Kei Kishimoto

Member of the Tokyo gantz team who unfortunately dies during her third mission before she could even clear one game. She is mostly known for her large breast size and for being naked in a lot of the chapters she is in. However I do like her character for more than just that because she really has been cool in the fights she has been in and her naïve attitude when she was staying with Kurono was really funny. She was not in it for long but I think she was one of the best written characters, I really wished she could have been revived later on in the series.

3 – Reika Shimohira

Member of the Tokyo gantz team and at one time its unofficial leader. Like Kishimoto she is mostly known for her large breast size and for her nudity but this is mostly excused by the fact that her occupation is a model. She is this high on my list is that because unlike Kishmoto she survives a lot longer and has been really badass in all of her fights either with the gantz swords or guns. Disappointed by her death however because like Oka it happened off screen.

2 – Joichiro Nishi

Veteran member of the Tokyo gantz team and one of the coolest characters of the series. Despite being only 14 years old he has killed both aliens and people and has a lot of knowledge about gantz even though he barely shares it. Only cares about himself and his points and his willing to use the lives of his team mates to be the best there is. His preferred fighting still is using the controller to become invisible, waiting for the alien to become distracted (Even if it is slaughtering his team mates) then moves in for the kill. His fate is left unknown because he is last seen stranded on the alien spacecraft.

1 – Shion Izumi

Veteran member of the Tokyo gantz team and had cleared the game at least two times, he is also my favourite gantz character. The first time he won the game he chose to leave but had the burning desire to go back even though he lost his memories of it. After receiving a message from gantz for more players he paints himself as a black man and goes on a massive killing spree, killing hundreds before entering the games again. He cares for none of his team mates and usually goes off after the boss alien for the highest score possible. He was the first one to use the gantz sword and is the best when wielding it. Killed by Hikawa which is a shame because it would have been interesting to see him interacting with the Osaka team or fighting the giant aliens.

Anime Review: Btooom!

My first anime review and I have decided to review one that I have seen recently. Like my other reviews this will contain spoilers but I will keep it to a minimum.

This anime series is about a twenty two year old young man named Ryota Sakamoto who is one of the worlds top players in an online game called Btooom!. Btooom! is similar to first person shooters but instead of guns the players use various types of bombs to kill each other. Since he is really obsessed with this game, and because the only other thing he wants to do some day is become a game designer for the people for made Btooom!, he constantly shuts himself in his room and constantly plays the game. However he suddenly wakes up one day on an island with a crystal implanted in his hand and a pack of timer bombs. He soon finds out that he is not alone on this island and that the conditions here are eerily similar to Btooom! Forced to play the game in real life now we see him struggle to survive and meet up with characters who want to escape the island as much as him.

I really liked the story of Btooom and this might have to do with the fact that I am a gamer as well and I have not seen any other anime that is about a video game. However even if I was not I would still really like this because the story is so well thought out and the rules of the game so interesting to follow. Take the bombs for example; there are many types with their own strengths and weaknesses and I was always wondering what other types Ryota’s opponents could have before they show them.

This anime is really violent with some graphic scenes, contains some nudity and deals with a lot of dark themes like survival, murder, attempted rape etc. However it is not excessive in it’s use of these, there is a lot of character development and plot to go along with them.

As for the characters I think each and everyone are really thought out well; Ryota is a really great main character who I can almost relate to because you know we are both gamers (But I am not as obsessive as him). He starts out as someone who could care less about anyone else to someone who wishes to save as many people as he can on the island. Plus it is great to see a shut in use his experience in video games to survive a lot of dangerous situations.

The other characters are great as well such as the female lead Himiko who is more than just fan service. She has had some really bad experience with men (and I am talking really bad) so it is good to see her slowly trusting Ryota through the course of the series.

Another one that stood out is Kosuke Kira a fourteen year old murderer and rapist and also a top player on Btooom!. The reason I like him is because he is such an evil, remorseless opponent, I do not thing there is any redeeming qualities about him and that is what I think makes a good crazy antagonist! There are a lot of other characters on the island who each have their own motivates and skills and it is so awesome when they face each other.

Finally the animation is really damn good, I do not think there is a single part in the series that is low quality. As for the voice acting I have no complains and I was surprised that a lot of the characters, even the main ones, have VA that I have not heard of before.

Overall this is one hell of a great anime is I have to pick one think that lets it down is that there is no really ending so I hope there is a second season soon. I really recommend this to anyone except those who do not like really violent anime.

Bleach Review: 565 God Like You

Long time since I have done a review of Bleach but here it is again, I know I said I would group my reviews of Bleach chapters together but this chapter is so damn important that I just had to review this single one. Now as ever I will begin with a quick overview.

This chapter starts off not with a look at the end of the fight between Renji and Mask De Masculine (I will probably do a review of that whole fight soon now that it seems to be completely over) but with a flashback of the birth of a very strange baby. This baby was born in a vegetative state; he could not move, speak hear or pretty much do anything but what he could do was cure the aliments of anyone who touched him be it physical, mental or psychological conditions. The reason for this is that the baby imparts some of its soul in to that individual which gave that person the power to over come his or her condition however once that person dies the part of the baby’s soul would return to him and he would gain the powers and experiences that soul gained while it was outside of the baby. Because of this the baby began to be able to move, see, talk and hear and the first word he heard was the chant to a God that he would take as his name and that name was Yhwach who in his teenage years grew up to look like Tensa Zangetsu! That is right, Tensa Zangetsu has been confirmed to be the younger version of Yhwach which many already had thought (myself included) but it is good to have it confirmed. 

Back in the present day Yhwach is still upon his throne and talks to the soul of Mask De Masculine and tells him to return to him, this confirms that Mask De Masculine and James are in fact dead. Just outside his door Uryu is about to enter before being stopped by Haschwalth, in the ensuring conversation between the two you can just tell these guys hate each other but since Uryu is named as Yhwach successor he seems to tolerate him and even describes more of Yhwachs powers to him. It seems that not only have all of the Sternritter have a part of Yhwach soul placed within them they have also had a letter engraved on their soul that represents their power, this seems to be a more powerful version of the soul imprinting that Yhwach used when he was only a baby. Haschwalth also goes on to say that the Soul Reapers have a part of Yhwach soul within them as well so that no matter which side gets the most losses Yhwach will continue to grow stronger. The chapter ends with the dawn of the second day of fighting as Yhwach wakes up and looks over the battlefield.

This was one hell of a unique chapter, a bit disappointed that we see no other fights or Sternritter but we get an awesome back story on Yhwach and some new revelations. The obvious one of being that Tensa Zangetsu was Yhwach younger version but one of the most important ones was that his power as a baby must have Auswahlen, which is the power to absorb the souls of Quincies which was how he could revive himself in the present day in the first place. 

Second was that Yhwach must always be absorbing the souls of those killed in battle to not only get stronger but to keep himself from going back in to a vegetative state, I am sure this was the seal Yamamoto mentioned when he defeated Yhwach a thousand years ago. Now does this mean that a thousand years ago Yamamoto managed to stop all the fighting and is that what the heroes are going to have to do now? 

Also since not only the Quincy but only the Soul Reapers have a part of Yhwach soul within him, he is just going to get more powerful the longer and bloodier this war becomes.

Lastly it is revealed by Haschwalth that Uryu did indeed join the Vandenreich to avenge his mother who was a victim of Auswahlen but since he drank the blood of Yhwach he is now bond to him like all the other Sternritter. Will Uryu then side with the Vandenreich or will he still try to avenge his mother? I am going to side with the first option because I really don’t see Uryu has a bad guy but the hatred between him and Haschwalth during their conversation kind of foreshadows a possible battle between them.

Now about Yhwach it seems that Kubo has made him out to be some kind of Jesus a little bit; he cured anyone who touched him, he is worshipped by all of his followers and Uryu drank his blood, like people drink wine at church. The Quincy has always had a holy theme going one with them and Yhwach only reinforces this. Not only that but besides from seeming to be unstoppable a this point he is woven in so well in to the Bleach lore in spite of being introduced in the final arc. Kubo I have to say that you have done a great job with this character!

In conclusion this was a great chapter and a nice break from the constant fighting we have had so far. Some might say it was a little slow and they might be right but since it revealed a lot about Yhwach that more than makes up for it.
