Film Review: Godzilla 2014

There will be some SPOILERS but not much because this is just a quick review and not too in depth. You might be wondering why I have chosen Godzilla and that is because I have randomly chosen one of the DVDs I got for Christmas to review and I just really wanted to get back to reviewing something that isn't Arrow, so why not start with this.

This film stars Bryan Cranston as Joe Brody as a former engineer who is obsessed with uncovering the mystery to the destruction of the nuclear plant he was working at that claimed his wife's life, he is also reluctantly joined by his son Ford (Aaron Taylor - Johnson). However what they uncover is something the government has been keeping a secret for many years; two monsters that can lay waste to the entire human race and one more that is a force of nature on to itself.

Well this film certainly had a lot of surprises and twists that I wasn't expecting when I first watched it and that is most of the time a good thing and Godzilla 2014 did it right for the most part. Firstly I guess I should touch first on the topic that split audiences down the middle on this film; the actual lack of Godzilla in a film called Godzilla. This was a really gutsy move because I know a lot of people saw this film and expected to see some kind of epic monster rumble that would last throughout most of the film. I have also seen the original Japanese Godzilla film and I know that Godzilla doesn't appear in that much either; it is all about the people dealing with Godzilla and I guess that is what they are trying to recreate here. For the most part they succeeded because I was never bored with the human elements in this film because I found their storylines interesting enough and engaging which could also be because of the great cast.

A great and compelling story is one of the most important elements in a creative work and action isn't important to make a great film; for example two of my favourite films are Wuthering Heights (1939) and Rebecca (1940) both staring Laurence Oliver who was one of the greatest actors in the world. Despite that I do feel cheated that there isn't a lot more of Godzilla and monster rumbles and that is because of two reasons. Firstly since this is the 2000s and not 1954 you expect that they should have put a lot more fighting in this because they can, take Pacific Rim for example which had a great story (almost manga like in my opinion) and they still gave us some awesome mech vs. monster battles. The second reason is because they kept teasing us with showdowns between Godzilla and the MUTOs too much; like when Godzilla and the male MUTO met at the airport and we didn't see it. However the final fight does make up for a lot of it because it was just that damn epic.

They do give you some backstory on Godzilla, that there was a race of giant creatures that once feasted on the planet's radiation, but I think they wanted to create an air of mystery around this colossal force of nature so instead they focused on the two MUTOs. I do like the story they gave with the MUTOs that they feed off radiation to reproduce and that the male was reasonable for all the death at the beginning at that Japanese power plant, effectively making it the bad guy right off the bat lol. As for the MUTOs design it is really creative because unlike most of the monsters from the old Godzilla films (Motha or Rodan) they look really alien. Sure you can compare them to insects more than anything else but I will say again they are really unique in their looks and colouring etc. It was interesting how they gave us a male and female and that the male is smaller but has the ability to fly while the female is a lot more bigger.

However whether or not you are a fan of how they treated Godzilla in this or the MUTO creatures you can't deny that they visual effects for them where just epic. Godzilla truly looked like a force of nature more than ever before, I mean the sheer size of him when he appeared really makes you think he earned the "God" in Godzilla. Not to mentioned the CGI looked absolutely perfect because that is definitely how I expected Godzilla to look and him and the two MUTOs looked so realistic; honestly I can really picture this stuff happening in real life. Godzilla definitely looks more like it's Japanese counterpart along with the awesome roar that they gave him which sounds close to the original too. Then we have all of the destruction caused by Godzilla and the MUTOs and none of it looked fake at all which is again a nod to the great CGI and I am someone who prefers practical effects.

Lastly we have the human cast which most of the film revolves around and I could have been really annoyed it did, like with the Transformers films. However unlike Transformers the humans in this film don't fill the screen time with a lot of meaningless dry humour and irrelevant subplots that no one even cares about. Take Byran Cranston for example who was just such a terrific actor in this especially at the beginning when he lost his wife and his obsession with finding out the truth. I really wished he was the main character throughout the whole film instead of the first quarter; I think they where giving us a twist we didn't expect but they built up his character so much with excellent scenes and dialogue that it might have been a bad move. Then there is Aaron Taylor - Johnson and I have been a fan of his since Kickass so I liked seeing him in this despite being overshadowed slightly by Cranston. I do enjoy his story of trying to get home to his family because through his perspective we got to see the destruction of major cities and several missions with the military.

Overall do I wish that Godzilla and the two MUTOs could have fought each other more; yes. However I just enjoyed the special effects and the human element so much, everything from Byran Cranston trying to learn the truth, Aaron Taylor - Johnson trying to get home and Ken Watanabe with the military. As I mentioned above I was not bored watching any of it and since I have got the film on DVD I would gladly watch it over and over again.

As I said at the beginning this was just a mostly spoiler free review because I just wanted to get back into reviewing films. Besides I might just make all my future film reviews spoiler free because they are longer to talk about than TV series.

SCORE: 8/10

Highlights: Godzilla and MUTO
                   Truly epic special effects
Great human story and perfect casting

Let - Downs: They gave us a lot of expectation and teases of some epic clash of monsters but only the ending of the film delivered on that
Should have had a lot more Byran Cranston

Revolution Season One: Children of Men

The penultimate episode.

The episode begins immediately after the last one and Rachael is tackled to the ground by Militia and her grenade thrown outside, five miles away Miles and his group have landed and make the rest of the way on foot. At The Tower it is revealed that Rachael has security clearance to enter and so she, Monroe, Randall and several other soldiers enter, this does not go unnoticed as the people watching them last episode arm themselves with weapons. Back outside Miles and his group find Aaron who tells them Rachael is captured and they have to get inside. Inside The Tower Randall tells them that it is immune to the Nanites and his workstation accesses the satellites in orbit to show him the whole world. He then tells Monroe that more weapons lie at level 12 and they all take the elevator down there.

Would have been great to have seen more of the world in Revolution
However the elevator stops on level 11 and the doors open but Monroe and the rest are attacked by the mysterious people carry weird grenade launcher looking guns. All of the soldiers are killed, Randall escapes in the confusion and Monroe and Rachael lock themselves in a reinforced room, Rachael tires to stab him with a knife but is quickly disarmed. Meanwhile outside Jason and Tom blow up the amplifier the Militia where using while the rest make a break for the door so Aaron can unlock it. He does and he, Miles, Nora and Charlie rush inside but Jason and Tom don't make it in time and a locked outside with the Militia.

Damn!
Inside Monroe and Rachael aren't killing each other but they continue to argue however Monroe finds the guns similar to what the group of people used but it is protected by reinforced glass. Rachael then has a Flashback one week before The Blackout and she and Ben are feeling guilty about the project and Rachael thinks they should have space from each other (stuck - up f***ing b***h). Outside Tom and Jason are captured however Tom is not too worried as he manages to raise doubts about Monroe's leadership to their guard who seems to listen.

"I've been in my tricky situations than this"
Inside The Tower Miles and the rest move more deeper into it but are soon pursued by the group with guns meanwhile Monroe tires to break the glass blocking the guns and Rachael refuses to help. Monroe says that he found out that he has a son and that he truly wants to just see him, this gets to Rachael who has another Flashback four months after The Blackout. Ben and his family have found a house and he is building a computer and powering it up with his pendant. Rachael is also there and expresses regret over what they created that have killed millions, Ben comforts her. Miles and the group are still running away from their pursuers and Aaron says that the code he created at MIT is what they used to program the Nanites and he should be able to use the backdoor in it to turn them off.

"Now I just need to build a TV and a DVD player"
Outside The Tower the guard who Tom was talking to earlier is convinced to overthrown Monroe and put Tom in charge, he frees Tom and Jason and leaves to find those who would join them. Miles and his group are attacked once again and are almost overwhelmed by their guns. Monroe and Rachael sees this on the monitors in their room and Monroe says the only way to save Charlie is to give him the code to the guns. Miles and Nora are separated from Aaron and Charlie, the latter of whom is trapped and almost killed but is saved by Monroe. Charlie is surprised and angry but Monroe takes off to find Miles and Rachael tells her to leave him, just then she, Charlie and Aaron are surrounded by the people with guns.

I wouldn't do that, the mess would be everywhere
Monroe manages to find Miles, who has a gun of his own, and says that they finally need to finish this. Charlie, Rachael and Aaron are escorted to another room filled with people and Grace is also there along with Dan Jenkins (Glenn Morshower) who was at The Tower the night of The Blackout. He says that he, his men and their families have been down he ever since The Blackout to protect The Tower and to make sure the lights stay off. He believes that humanity can't go back to the way it was when they abused electricity to make more advanced war (like with missiles or bombs) and proceeds to burn Jane's journal. Aaron almost begs him to stop saying that power would also mean medicine, fresh water and feeling safe again but is unable to stop Jenkins burning the journal. Grace says there is another reason and that turning off all the Nanites at once might burn the entire world and says that Rachael knew that.

"Fire is the only tool we need down here"
The quest to turn the power back on is almost at an end but I really shouldn't be surprised that there is quite a lot of opposition. First I really want to praise the action that was in this episode because there was a lot of it, the stand out being Jenkins's group and those guns that they have. Some of the most graphic and best action scenes where with them, like when they ambushed Monroe's group and exploded those soldiers and when they chased down Miles's group. Another standout is when Tom and Jason blew up the amplifier and the ensuring fire fight that followed was really cool as well.

"Must have weapons!"
Also I didn't expect Tom and Jason to be captured but I am glad they did because Tom is finally, finally doing the take over of the Monroe Republic! He has always been a master with words and using the situation of many soldiers doubting Monroe to his advantage. I wonder what he'll do with the Republic, will he make peace with Georgia because of the time he has worked there or still make war? Either way I am looking forward to seeing what he will do and it is a shame we only have one more episode this season to find out. Speaking of Monroe I wonder if he will find out what Tom has done before the season is over. I also actually like the one on one time he got with Rachael and that in the end they actually teamed up together for a short. We also got a big confrontation set up between him and Miles so I am really looking forward to watching that!

Lets all follow Miles's lead!
We also got some more secrets on the Nanites and the possibility that they could destroy the world, now that was quite the shocker at the end. However I don't think this will dismay Rachael from turning them off because she is just that single minded. We also have the reveal of the group that guards The Tower and I have to say that they aren't crazies they are doing what they are doing for non - selfish reason but Aaron does make a good point too. I guess next episode Charlie, Rachael and Aaron are going to have to fight through them all to turn the power back on. Also fifteen years underground? I wouldn't be able to do that.

Now that is really cool entrance
There isn't much I dislike about this episode because Rachael was alright this time I just really found her annoying in the Flashback when she wants space from Ben, again she is trying to make herself the better person in every argument or conflict when she obviously isn't. Also once again her journey is shown to be for the most selfish of reasons because if there is the possibility of destroying the world, however small, why still go through with it? This just shows that she really isn't one of the good guys because she honestly doesn't care who she kills if they stand in her way or prove her wrong (stuck up whore!)

"Monroe leaves us for one second and now the camps on fire"
Overall this was one really great episode and setup for the finale and I really liked almost everything about it. Rachael was a tad annoying and Miles, Charlie and Aaron didn't play much of a significant role however Aaron did have a small reveal that his code was used for the Nanites, that was cool and I am sure Miles will have a larger role in the finale.

SCORE: 9/10

Highlights: Tom gaining the Monroe Republic
All the action scenes in The Tower
Sets up for a lot of events and problems for the finale

Let - Downs: Rachael and her Flashbacks
Miles, Charlie and Aaron didn't have that large a role in this episode

Revolution Season One: Kashmir

Quite a unique episode!

The episode begins in a Rebel base at West Chester and Miles is being beaten up by some of the Rebels. Turns out the group went to the base in hope of finding some help to infiltrate Philadelphia and even though Nora showed them her tattoo, they are still wary of them because of Miles. However Miles manages to convince them that he is their best chance to assassinate Monroe so they agree to give him a few Rebels to assist them which includes Sargent Joseph Wheatley (Reed Diamond).

Nothing like getting wasted before a big mission
The group then makes it to the outskirts of Philadelphia just outside of an old, abandon subway tunnel that Miles says is like a back entrance to the city. After taking out the guards the group make their way inside however Charlie steps on something buried in the ground which Nora reveals to be a land mine. Meanwhile in Independence Hall Rachael is working on a device and explains to Tom and one of his men that is can amplify the power of a pendant. Apparently the pendant only had a range of 9 - 15 feet and can only power small things but the amplifier boosts its range to half a mile and can power jets and tanks.

Why still have candles when the pendant can power the lights/lamps in your area? Just making a fire hazard
Back in the tunnel Nora manages to free Charlie from the land mine but the explosion after seals the entrance to the tunnel so that the group must move on. Along the way Miles thinks he sees a Militia scout but it turns out to be nothing and Nora even thinks that she is dragged underwater by a alligator. Aaron figures out why Miles and Nora thought they saw what they saw; they where hallucinating! The sealed entrance has cut off their air supply so they are slowly suffocating and seeing things, the group decides to move even faster to the exit now.

Would have been interesting if an alligator was really there lol
Later on the group comes across the exit that Miles was leading them to but it turns out that it has been sealed up. Miles does not know what else they could do but Wheatley insists that they move on and try and find another exit. Aaron also has his own hallucination about his lost wife who insults Aaron by saying why he is this strong for Charlie when he abandoned her when things got tough. He manages to snap out of it but shortly after this Miles has another one and sees a door while hearing Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir".

"I really wish I didn't get so wasted earlier now"
As Miles steps through the door and ends up in Monroe's office in Independence Hall during the day time and the doors are then closed by a smiling Monroe who embraces Miles. Miles says that this isn't real to which Monroe quickly agrees, saying that he is like the manifestation of Miles's thoughts. We learn that the reason that Miles left the Republic was that he tried to assassinate Monroe but couldn't go through with it and the reason he tired was because Monroe went too far and killed too many innocents. Monroe also reveals Miles's darkest secret that he wants no one else to know; that if Monroe forgave him and let him back in the Republic, Miles would most likely accept. Miles denies this but Monroe merely says that he is in his head and knows what he is thinking however this is soon ended when Charlie snaps Miles out of it.

"If this really is a dream.....then this glass will never run out!"
Eventually the group finds another exit to the tunnels however Wheatley turns out to be a Militia spy and quickly kills all the Rebels who are with them. He then moves Miles through the exit at gunpoint and blocks the door so Charlie, Nora and Aaron can't follow. However they do break free and Charlie kills Wheatley but not before being grazed by a bullet and smacking her head on the concrete. She has a dream where her father is still alive and she is safe back at their home but reluctantly leaves after hearing Miles and says her goodbyes to him. The group then prepares to leave the tunnels having finally made it in to Philadelphia.

Yeah don't take cover Charlie, I'm sure the guy with the gun won't shot back
The episode ends with Monroe bringing in Jaffe to look at Rachael's amplifier and Jaffe examines it and says that it is actually a time bomb. Monroe then says that since Jaffe has decided to cooperate Rachael and Danny will no longer be needed; so Rachael, in desperation, stabs and kills Jaffe so that Monroe will still need her.

I really wished you killed the b***h straight away Monroe
Well this episode was certainly different and that was owing to the fact that there wasn't a single Flashback instead we got hallucinations for most of the major characters. While I really like the Flashbacks I must admit that this was a really nice touch and it still provided some more character insight that the Flashbacks usually provide.

Almost a shame, bet Wheatley could a gotten a big promotion
The best ones where Mile's hallucination and Charlie's dream, firstly for Miles we finally get the reason why he left the Republic. I thought it was going to be something big but it turns out he couldn't do it and maybe he still won't be able to when they finally have their confrontation because that is what the series is leading to (since its has been shown that they where like brothers). Also Miles will also have to make his choice of staying with the group and re-joining Monroe since the Hallucination - Monroe revealed that Miles is seriously considering going back to the Republic. Ones more thing I know Miles left because Monroe might have crossed some line but Miles really has to take responsibly since, as shown in the episode three Flashbacks, Miles was the one who planted the seeds of the Republic.

"Guarding this old subway tunnel is the easiest job in the world. No one ever comes here"
As for Charlie's, even though it was just a dream, I see it as the closure between her and her father that she never manage to get. It was done really well and it is almost like Charlie is finally ready to move on, or a least has to, from her father's death and focus on the mission a head. Plus we get to see Ben again and as I have said before I really like his character and his actor and I'm glad they find ways of keeping him in the show even though he is dead.

Awwww, I'm kind of touched
Now as for what I didn't like about the episode and you have guessed it; Rachael. I'm sorry but her damn annoying and defiant attitude really gets on my nerves in this episode. I really hate that she killed Jaffe, just mercilessly like that and I don't care if she said she was sorry because I doubt she was. I know she was doing it for Danny but if she really was she could have just cooperated with Monroe from the very beginning and saved herself that last few months of backstabbing. Jaffe was only cooperating with Monroe because Rachael gave her no choice, he was doing it for his daughter but did Rachael care? Hell no! You see I just really don't know what they want to do with her character; is she one of the good guys? No because she kills and betrays everyone, even innocents who do not deserve it, all the writers are doing to her character, in my opinion, is turning her into this extremely unlikable person who has no redeemable traits whatsoever. I truly hate her and her actress, this show would have been pure perfect if it was not for her.

Even if Tom is only in the episode for a few minutes it is still worth it!
As for everything else it made for a great episode; Wheatley's reveal of being a spy and killing the Rebels was another highlight of the episode and Aaron dealing with the hallucination of his wife was interesting to see. Also I liked the group's journey through the subway tunnel with the lack of air because you can really see their desperation and you almost kind of thing one of them might not have made it. Overall a unique episode that made from something different with Miles, Charlie and Aaron struggling with their inner demons but Rachael just really let it down in every scene she was in and I was kind of hoping that Jaffe would have been around for a lot longer.

SCORE: 7/10

Highlights: Miles's hallucination about Monroe
                   Charlie's hallucination about her dad
The whole desperation of them being in that tunnel

Let - Downs: Rachael
                      The murder of Jaffe

Revolution Season One: Sex and Drugs

Review for episode six is here.

The episode opens up with the group stealing a Militia wagon and racing off through the woods as fast as they can; Nora's wound from the previous episode is infected and Miles says he knows someone who might help. Aaron tries to reassure Charlie but she, most likely still angry with Maggie's death and losing Danny, vents her frustration out on Aaron. Aaron then has a Flashback to the day of The Blackout where he and his wife Priscilla Pittman (Maureen Sebastian) are celebrating their anniversary in their limo when the power goes out and a truck crashes into them.

Say goodbye to your fabulous lifestyle Aaron
In Philadelphia Tom hands Danny over to Monroe who greets him and says that he knew his mother, Danny is curious about this but Monroe orders him taken away. Monroe then promotes Tom to Major, asking him to head up Intelligence and Interrogation, Tom is pleased with this because he can now work closer to home and his family. Back with the group they stop outside of a mansion surrounded by burnt poppy fields and Aaron is annoyed that they are seeking the help of a drug dealer. They are let through to the mansion where a man named Drexel angrily pulls out his gun and orders them on their knees, he points the gun at Miles's head and pulls the trigger - except it was empty and he was playing a joke!

You have one sick sense of humour Drexel
Drexel let's his doctor see to Nora and she is given a blood transfusion by Miles and Aaron has another Flashback two months after The Blackout and he and his wife are struggling. Priscilla is ill but luckily a man named Sean comes across them and treats her with some medicine. He explains that some lakes have become contaminated because the sewer pumps stopped working and says Aaron should be more careful. We then see Charlie having a bath but, haunted by her father's and Maggie's death and her recent failure, gets up to rip up her postcards of Pre - Blackout cities.

We get some side - boob action here!
In Philadelphia, Monroe is pleased with Jason with his recent work and report and shows him the drawing of the pedant and asks if the group has it, Jason answers that Aaron has it. Monroe says to Tom that Strausser should retrieve the pendant which Jason is not happy with because Strausser doesn't leave survivors but Monroe doesn't care about that. Back in the group they are getting ready to leave because Miles does not trust Drexel enough for them to stay any longer but Drexel then bursts into the room. It turns out he worked closely with Miles when he was with the Militia but when Miles left anyone who was associated with him lost a lot of reputation and now he wants payback. He wants to get rid of the head of the Irish O'Halloran family that have been burning his poppy fields and wants Charlie to do kill him because they will least suspect her. Miles volunteers to do it but Drexel says he will kill them all if Charlie doesn't go, she agrees.

"My beautiful poppies, all ruined!"
Charlie is dressed in an slinky dress and given a hair pin that contains a needle to stab O'Halloran with; she is to pose as one of Drexel's girl who is sick of been roughed up, Drexel even smacks her for good measure. Aaron then has another Flashback and it is eight months after The Blackout and Aaron and Priscilla have joined up with other survivors but their camp is currently being raided. Priscilla is captured and Aaron his beaten up when he tries to rescue her but Sean comes back for them, fights off the bandits and even breaks the neck of one of them.

I guess hand to hand combat isn't really your thing Aaron
When Charlie leaves, Drexel gives Miles a pouch full of gold and says he never expected her to come back alive, Aaron then begs Miles to rescue Charlie and leave him with Nora. Charlie then makes it to the O'Halloran mansion and it turns out they are all a family of ex - cops and their head, Bill, is burning Drexel's poppy fields because his daughter overdosed on the drugs produced from them a while ago. Charlie manages to knock him out cold and begs forgiveness when she is just about to stab him however Miles manages to stop her.

Just in the nick of time Miles
Back at Drexel's place Aaron, and a now awake Nora, are brought in to the yard where Drexel gives them each a gun and says they will have to shoot each other but he will let the one who shoots the other first go. Aaron has another Flashback shortly after the raid on their last camp and he is unable to start a fire and he confides to Priscilla that he cannot do anything to protect her now however Priscilla doesn't mind any of that. In the present day Aaron says to Nora that she should shoot him because he can't protect anyone but when she refuses Aaron shoots himself. A satisfied Drexel steps forward but is then shot dead by Aaron who managed to shoot himself in the flask he keeps in his breast pocket, Drexel's guards then just let them go.

"Did I fire six shots or only five......it was one"
The groups reunites outside of Drexel's mansion and Miles decides they should move on. Aaron has another Flashback to the morning after his conversation with Priscilla and he has decided to leave her, leaving a note saying that she is better off without him. The episode ends in Philadelphia where Rachael is reunited with Danny after twelve years.

"Sorry for almost getting you all killed....so lets just forget it ever happened"
I guess they decided to do another character centred episode and this time they gave Aaron the spotlight.

Aaron has always been one of my favourite characters so I am glad we now get an insight in to his past just like Maggie and Tom did in the last two episodes. It is quite sad seeing how someone who had the money and the power to do anything before lose everything in a single day. I have read other reviews for this episode and many people have criticised Aaron for abandoning his wife but I sympathise with him a bit more. The world of Revolution may have somewhat stabilized now fifteen years later but from the Flashbacks we see in this episode (and the ones with Miles, Monroe and Tom) it must have been a small hell at first. Maybe Aaron did make a stupid and selfish move but at the time survival was a lot more harder so he did what he thought was best for his wife, he didn't care about his own life.

I wonder how long Monroe can just make him stand there?
Drexel turned out to be a completely lunatic and a great small antagonist for this episode, he was what I hoped Ray who controlled the dogs was like; completely crazy with no need to create sympathy for his character. So overall I liked the events what happened at his mansion and the crazy shoot out game he made Aaron and Nora play at the end, even though I didn't expect they would kill off another main character already.

"That's right kid; there no one crazier than me"
One think in the episode that I was not to sure there was a point to was Charlie trying to kill Bill O'Halloran. Don't get me wrong I really like the surprise that they where ex cops all trying to do the right thing (I thought they where rival drugs dealers at first!) and it showed that there is good people in this world. However I just didn't see the point in the end with making up that elaborate plan with Charlie when Miles managed to sneak in, most being completely off screen, in what seemed like no time at all. Not to spoil anything but this isn't the first time this will happen; where a big chunk of the episode is given over to something but Miles ends up doing it easily. I have to mark the episode down when it does this because even though it shows how awesome Miles is, the whole plan before then could have been screen time for something else.

Now that is one kick ass chair!
Overall I am glad that one of my favourite character gets his own episode and Flashbacks even though it was not as strong as Tom's was. Also just like Tom's episode it mostly stuck with the group because it barely jumped to any other storylines. I'm guessing that now that Danny is in Philadelphia those are the only two main plots that will jump back and forth to each other, and that is actually a good thing for me because now some characters will get more screen time like Monroe. It also looks like we will see more of Strausser soon because Monroe has sent him after the group, can't wait to see what that's going to be like.

SCORE: 7/10

Highlights: Aaron centred episode and past revealed
Drexel as the villain for the episode
Drexel's sick game at the end

Let - Downs: Wasn't as strong or exciting as Tom's was
Charlie's mission was pointless in the end because Miles could have done it
